Frost is predicted

The weather forecast is calling for a possible frost as early as Thursday morning. Although the community garden is in what I call an "urban heat bubble" and likely will escape this time, I suggest that if you have peppers, tomatoes, flowers or tender herbs like basil in your plot, that you pick them before Thursday morning. Anything in the cabbage family, including kale and broccoli will be fine. Root vegetables also will be fine. Any kind of squash can be picked after a frost, but summer squashes should probably be picked before a frost. Frost will kill squash vines. Winter squashes and pumpkins can be picked after their vines are dead.
Remember, if you decide to use this as a good time to prepare your bed for winter:
Remove all fencing, stakes, string, wire, signs and decorations from your plot. Anything that belongs to you personally take home, the rest can be stored in the shed.
Leave your vegetation in the plot. Knock down or cut up large weeds, sunflowers and cornstalks to aid in decomposition.
Any vegetables you don't want for yourself, consider putting on the free table for others to enjoy.
Small trash can be put in the bucket in the shed marked "trash", but if you have large trash, please either take it home or put it in the dumpster in the church parking lot.
When the weather gets consistently colder, the hose will be put away, so at that point, if you need to water, you will have to use watering cans.
I am going to do some cleaning/weeding of the circular flower bed this fall. If anyone wants to volunteer to help me in this effort, please let me know.
