Getting Ready to Garden!

I know many of you are anxious to get going out in the garden. We are waiting on manure to be spread, then we will rototill. After that, we will assign this year's plots. Although it feels like planting time, it is actually a little early for most things. If you look around you will see that only daffodils and dandelions are blooming yet. Some trees are just beginning to leaf out, but most are still dormant. I haven't taken the soil temp yet, but I am guessing it is around 45 degrees. It is best for cold crops like potatoes, peas and onions for the soil to be around 50 degrees. I like the soil to be closer to 55 - 60 degrees before planting cabbage family plants. Most everything else wants 70 degree soil and a guarantee that we are past our last frost. So, please be patient! I looked at the ten day forecast and I think after we get past the next weekend we will stay pretty consistently warmer, so we can safely start with everything but those crops in the third category I listed above.

I have started tomatoes and peppers at home. I will be transplanting them in a couple of weeks. When I do that, I invite anyone who wants to bring some soil and a pot to come and take extra tomato plants home with them. I may also have extra peppers, but I am not sure. If you do that, you will need to keep them sheltered in the pot for a couple more weeks before setting out in the garden. I will post here when the time comes.

We still have two raised beds available that have not been claimed. Please let me know if you are interested. I will be working on those to add some extra soil and compost in the coming weeks. If you have a bed already and do not want me to add to it, please let me know.

There are still plots available. If you know of someone who would like one, please have them sign up through the contact form on the website. I will post when we are ready to assign plots. If you are new to the garden, make sure you get with me to sign your forms.
