Mulched plants in the garden
Mulched plants in the garden

This season has started out slowly, but with the warm weather and sunshine, everything is catching up. That includes the weeds. I placed several bales of hay in the shed today. If you take the time to carefully weed around your plants (in the early or late hours, not during the heat of the day), then put down the mulch, you will save yourself lots of time and effort the rest of the season.

The mulch serves several purposes: It shades out weeds, it keeps moisture in the soil, and it decomposes and eventually enriches the soil. When using the hay for mulch, don't be skimpy. It takes a fair amount to shade out weeds. I have more hay I can bring down, so when I see we need more, I will re-stock.

There is still a lot of unclaimed space in the garden. I will assign some to Christian Neighbors in Thursday of this week, but otherwise, there is still more unused space. After meeting with Christian Neighbors on Thursday, I will have a better idea of how much. This is a busy year for me personally, so I would prefer others to claim empty space and either use it personally or for community use. I have extra tomato plants I will bring down in Thursday. I will either put those in Christian Neighbors' plot or a community plot. If you still want or need tomatoes, let me know, and I can save some for you. I will also likely plant some herbs, green beans and lettuce in both the Christian Neighbors plot and the community plot.

Please let me know if you are interested in adopting a community plot.

Remember to water early or late, not in the heat of the day.
